Can I retrieve an updated Pages document from iCloud?

I worked during travel offline and saved several new files, not a problem. But after coming home I found out that the old docu iCloud file that I had updated was only in the original version. I suspect that the problem occurred as I renamed the file. I did not observe any problem when doing that, but when I opened the file at home the document was with the new name but without large modifications what I did during travel and offline.

Any chance to find that updated file anymore? I did save that thousand. times...

When you rename a file, the operating system first copies it to the new name and then removes the original. However, in Pages v14.4, it uses versioning that would be tied to the original filename, not the renamed document.

I am afraid you have lost the missing content unless you have that original document backed up with Time Machine, or stored on another device, which would allow you to recover it prior to its renaming. You might also sign into iCloud and see if there is any document to recover. Apple provides a 30-day floating window for the recovery process, though I suspect it may not treat a rename as a deletion.

I never rename Pages documents.

Neither do I the renaming after this. Thanks a lot for a very informative response.
In earlier Pages I did renaming without problems.

I have never lost a Pages document or content in two decades. Never assume that Apple is not changing something in evolving application versions. The devil is in the details… 😎

Not renaming Pages documents is my policy, not an attempt at setting policy for you.
