Since you had to have added the photo to the Contact card in the first place you must have the full version in your Photos library or somewhere on your drive or device.
What device are you asking about? My response is for a macOS device.
Thank you, but the image only appears in vignette form and I would like the whole picture, unaffected by the greyed out frame through which I can see the rest of the picture. Apple support haven’t got an answer, but the image must be stored somewhere.
Hello, and thank you for your question. I have looked through all my photos on the iPhone and iPad and iCloud and cannot find it. I have looked in hidden photos and deleted items and drawn a blank. This is what baffles me. The photo was not taken by me but I must, as you say, once have had a copy in order to add it to my contact page. It’s truly baffling.
The image contained in Contacts is very low resolution. A screenshot is probably as good as any method to copy it.

Sure, the data must be stored, but not as an image file. There's nothing to be recovered.
