Logic Pro X - All Third Party AU Instruments Disable

I’m having the weirdest issue!

Versions:

Logic Pro X (version 11.2)

OS (15.5)

Serum, NI, UA, Vital, etc (up to date)

The problem:

When I switch my audio driver (output or input or both) all my third party AU Instruments disable / gray out. Third party plugins don’t, just instruments. I can reopen the third party instrument afterwards, but obviously with any changes lost.

What I’ve tried:

restart comp, rescan/reset plugins, test new projects create a new user profile, reset preferences, reset logic settings, reset plist, deleted Logic and reinstalled it

What is this vex??

I am also having the same issue. Third party VI's will not reload after updating to Logic 11.2. Please don't ask the simple stuff because it's all been tried. It is a bug. The VIs included as part of Logic reload without issue. To be 100% clear:

  1. Start new project
  2. Add software instrument track
  3. Add third party VI to track...there are no issues, VI works as expected
  4. Save project
  5. Quit Logic 11.2
  6. Reopen Logic 11.2
  7. Reopen Project
  8. Third party VI name appears but is grayed out
  9. If you choose the plugin again from the plugin manager it loads, but of course it is now at the default patch. If you happened to rename the region and don't remember the patch name, you're screwed.
  10. Any existing projects with third party VIs will be ruined if you open them and save them. Try remembering a patch name from a year ago...your screwed.

It's a total disaster for my studio. There does not appear to be a clean way to revert to 11.1.2. If someone can give me a foolproof way to do that, I'd be grateful.

I was able to finally solve my specific issue. I went through the extremely painful task of checking all 1700 of my plugins. Some did need updating. After the update I did a full audio unit reset, but that did not resolve the issue...but...the plugin manager had flagged six SSL plugins as incompatible. This was the first time after many resets that these plugins were flagged. I checked in iLok and they turned out to be expired demos. I went to the components folder and deleted them. I then did another full audio reset, restarted the computer and now my VIs reload as normal. Why expired effects plugin demos would stop VIs from reloading is a mystery that may never be known. To anyone else with this issue, the work I had to do to resolve it was hard...but, at least for my situation, it was worth it. I don't think there is any other way to solve except to go through every single plugin and do a full audio reset and reboot after each iteration where an issue with a plugin is discovered (or suspected since Logic did not catch the issues initially). Hope this helps.

No issues here!

M2 MBP, Logic 11.2 (silicon native), macos 15.5 with NI, UA, Vital and many more. I have many audio driver options to switch,

like built-in, UAD, BlackHole, Thunderbolt-Display Audio, HDMI Audio ....

It takes some seconds (around 5 sec depending on the amount of plugins) to have all plugins re-initiated on my machine after switching. Wait a little bit and look at your Mixer Window. What computer model are you using?

When did this start to happen? What did you change?

I now have absolute irrefutable empirical evidence that my current issue with VIs not re-loading in Logic Pro 11.2 is due to the Waves Diamond package. I don't know whether it's an issue with the package install process or with an individual plugin (or plugins) within the package as there is no way to load the plugins in the package individually (another one of Waves crappy processes). I would suspect, but cannot say for certain, that this will be the case for all Waves packages where the plugins cannot be individually loaded. All Waves plugins that I have loaded individually do not cause the issue. I plan to contact Waves, inform them of the Diamond package issue and request that they give me the individual plugins from the package so I can further test. If they do not agree, I'm done with Waves. I hope my testing helps others solve any similar issues they are having with VIs not re-loading in Logic Pro 11.2.

Question for you....

Even when you tested new projects under a new user profile, you still had issues?

Seems like a Logic Pro bug for sure. I surmise you were not having issues previous to upgrading to 11.2?

Have you reported this?

I have an additional update. I neglected to reinstall my Waves v15 plugins and when I did...it broke the system again! Did a full Waves cleanup from the Waves Central maintenance screen and everything worked as normal. Even though Waves way of doing things is total crap, I still blame Apple because everything worked in 11.1.2. Something has changed in Core Audio that makes this break. I need some of the Waves plugins, but crappy Waves makes it impossible to uninstall individual plugins via Waves Central... So now I will go through the Waves plugins one at a time (an impossibly frustrating task) to find out whether the issue is at the individual plugin level or it's all Waves plugins...uggghhhh....

@heyheymrgray (and anyone else with this issue)

You'll be happy to know that I've found a way to individually load Waves plugins that are part of a subscription package. This should work for your Ultimate package and I'm 99.99999% sure it will solve your VIs not re-loading issue. Be aware, you are going to have to manually install all 242 plugins. First, go to the Waves website Ultimate Bundle page (https://www.waves.com/subscriptions/ultimate) and print out all of the plugins...you'll need it for reference when doing the re-install. Then, open Waves Central and go to "Settings" and click on "Complete Waves Cleanup". This will de-install all your Waves plugins. Now click on "Install Products" in the left column. Now click on "All Products" on the top menu. Further to the right you will see the "View" dropdown. Click on "V15 Plugins" and un-click anything else that checked. You will see a list of all V15 plugins. Now, take out the list your printed from the Ultimate bundle web page and, using that as your guide, click on each individual plugin in the list that's on the printout (I avoided anything that was "NX" related since I need to do separate testing on those...I don't trust them). Click install. Once installed they will show up on Waves Central as "installed" but not "activated"....regardless, they still will work. These are the steps I followed with my Diamond package and it worked. My third party VIs re-load without issue and all my Waves plugins work as well. I have a support ticket into Waves and I suggest that you (and anyone else with this issue) open a ticket as well since it's obviously their issue. Hope this helps. Best of luck with it. Now, I need a break...three days of testing, installing, re-installing and documenting has worn me out :-)

Hi,

Unless you know someone who has a copy of 11.1.2 or you backed it up yourself, you will not be able to roll back easily. You need the correct OS to download a specific version of Logic Pro. This thread covers it well:

Starting with Rosetta enabled does not fix the issue. New user account does not fix the issue. Reinstalling macOS does not fix the issue. Reinstalling Logic Pro 11.2 does not fix the issue. Reinstalling plugins does not fix the issue. The simple and obvious rote solutions do not work. Eddie Grey mentioned the SSL 360 app which I am running. Next step is to deinstall that, reboot and test again.

That might be the case but, since I only have Diamond, I can't be sure. Did you try de-installing Ultimate and seeing if your third party Virtual Instruments re-load after that? I'd be interested to know if it's just the Diamond package or not that causes the issue. I know it's a royal P.I.T.A. since the only way to do it is to de-install all the Waves plugins and then re-install everything except for Ultimate...but, it might be worth the shot.
