Issue w/ Macbook not recognizing Monitor that Previously worked fine, not due to OS update

I am having trouble with my MacBook detecting my portable monitor. Ever since I closed my MacBook with the portable monitor still connected (which I have done before with no issues), my MacBook fails to recognize the portable monitor.

When plugging in my portable monitor as I usually do, (USBC to USBC for power, HDMI to MiniHDMI for picture) my MacBook is not detecting the portable monitor. The portable monitor is still receiving power and when I plug in the HDMI so that both cords are fully plugged in, the monitor even recognizes the HDMI but does not display the MacBook screen.

I have 2023 14” MacBook Pro w/ M2 Pro chip & updated to latest version of macOS Sequoia 15.5 (issue did not begin after a software update). The monitor is WGK Portable Monitor 14 Inch FHD1200P

I have tried restarting the laptop w/ & w/out external display connected, restarting with holding down the kets for NVRAM, trying all ports with different sides of the cable into each device, and with the portable monitor power coming from an outlet vs the MacBook as it usually is. In the displays setting, I have tried changing all resolutions, as well as settingsOption+click “Detect Displays” as nothing comes up.

My MacBook continues to work with all other monitors as a second display, and the portable monitor continues to work with all other laptops I have tried to use it with. I have tried every troubleshooting idea I could find online and have no idea what to do now.

If the monitor shows up in Displays Settings, have you checked whether it is set to run in extended desktop mode? I'd expect a second monitor to have nothing on it – no menu bar, no Dock, and no windows until you dragged some there – in that mode.

Thanks for the response! Just to clarify, the monitor does not show up anywhere on the MacBook screen. But I know the external monitor is picking up that and HDMI is pugged in and should be connecting like it used to. When I plug in the HDMI the cord to both the MacBook & monitor, the screen on the monitor has a little "HDMI" logo pop up on the screen - where nothing will come up if I plug in the. HDMI to the monitor with if the other side of the HDMI not connected to anything.

I cannot change the mode of my MacBook in display settings because nothing is being registered by the MacBook, but the monitor. I have also tried every combination of setting with the monitor to see if that would help, and nothing changed.

you need to run your experiments very carefully.

The Mac does not rely on Windows-like side-loaded "Drivers" which are actually packages of resolutions and settings for a specific display. Instead, it goes straight to the immutable source -- it asks the display itself.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)
