Quick Migration Assistant Question

Monday due date for my new iMac, first replacement for 7 years, 15 years since picking up a new one.

  1. Will MA replace newer apps with older ones ?
  2. Can you deselect particular apps you don’t need transferring ?

Yes that was a typo. What I meant was when migrating the older Apple apps (for example Safari, Music, Mail etc....) will NOT migrate. Don't think too much about migrating all of the thinking has already been done for you, simply follow the instructions in the Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant link I provided. If you do, when the migration is complete and you start using the new Mac it will look VERY similar to the old Mac. All of your settings will come over, all of your data and all of your third party (for example if you use a 64bit version of MS Office for Mac) will come over.

I migrated from a 2017 27" iMac to a Mac Mini M4 and used Migration Assistant. When you first boot up the new Mac at some point you'll be asked if you want to migrate your data from a Time Machine backup or iMac. Since I had backed up my iMac just before booting up my Mini I chose Time Machine:

Then I chose what data to migrate:

I choose all items because I had several apps that had activation codes and didn't want to have to rummage around to find the codes so I could reinstall those apps. It all went smooth as silk.

  1. Yes if they are Apple apps. If you are referring to 3rd party apps, they should be updated prior to migrating.
  2. No, Migration Assistant is an all or nothing proposition.

Finally, please follow the instructions in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant if you want the most reliable migration and setup of a new Mac. If you are migrating from a PC then of course please use Apple's instructions to use Migration Assistant on the PC.

I’m migrating from a 2017 iMac.

You stated that Apple apps which are newer ones the new iMac will get replaced by older ones from the old iMac ? Is that a typo ?

Surely 3rd party apps aren’t on the new iMac right out the box so I’m safe there and can update as and when required. Some I don’t want a later version if the older 3rd party app works; if they don’t on the new iMac I will of course update where necessary.

I will bin apps I don’t want on the new iMac ( seems a bit of a mess as not all ‘bits’ are deleted dragging to the bin ).

Thanks for the heads up on the other stuff.
