How to fix 'The installer information on the recovery server is damaged' error and missing Macintosh HD after resetting a 2017 iMac?

Hi

My Dad has a 2017 iMac which was on Ventura iOS.

My Dad wants my niece to have it as he has bought new.

To reset it, i had to use disc Utility to erase and rebuild the Macintosh HD, it did this with no issues.

On rebooting it opened in recovery Mode.

I selected Reinstall MacOS, Install macOS Sierra came up. I clicked continue. A pop up stating 'To download and restore macOS, your computers eligbility will be verified with apple.

I clicked continue - An error message shows stating The installer information on the recovery server is damaged.

I return to the Recovery Mode options list. When i select Disk Utility, Macintosh HD does not show.

It shows 3x Internal

  • AppleAPFS Media (3.12TB showing as unutilized)
  • Apple HDD ST3000DM001 Media (3TB showing as unformatted)
  • Apple SSD SM0128L Media (121.33GB showing as unformated)

It also shows Disk Images:

  • Apple DIsc Image Media with a sub disc called CS X Base System (1.29GB with 724.3 MB free)

I have completed first aid on all - All are clear.

What can i do from here?

Thanks in advance

Hello zcbb 😄

Please clarify - have you actually done all of these things:-

  1. Start up from macOS Recovery.
  2. When you see the utilities window in Recovery, choose Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.
  3. TypeĀ diskutil resetFusionĀ in the Terminal window, then press Return.
  4. TypeĀ YesĀ (with a capitalĀ Y) when prompted, then press Return.
  5. When Terminal indicates that the operation was successful, quit Terminal to return to the utilities window.
  6. ChooseĀ Reinstall macOS, then follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the Mac operating system. Your Mac restarts from your Fusion Drive when done.

If so, and the iMac has good hardware, you should be able to install macOS Ventura 13.7.6

Hi again zcbb 😊

Thanks for the update - you're almost there!

It sounds like the Fusion Drive may not have been fully recreated if ā€œAppleAPFSMediaā€ isn’t showing in Disk Utility. That’s usually the name of the newly formed Fusion Drive onceĀ diskutil resetFusionĀ has been run successfully.

If you're seeing only the HDD or SSD (not both fused as one), then Fusion Drive wasn't properly reset. But don’t worry - it's understandable if this feels like too much. Installing macOS on the HDD aloneĀ willĀ work as a temporary solution, and you're absolutely right to go with what feels manageable right now.

If you do ever feel up to revisiting it, I or others here would be glad to walk you through aĀ step-by-step guideĀ to properly erase and rebuild the Fusion Drive.

In the meantime, well done for getting this far - and enjoy the working Mac!

Follow previous advise >> first

FYI in regards to OS X 10.12 Sierra and macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Both of these two versions, seem to have been Removed to the Apple Recovery Servers

This would answer the question regarding the error message while in Recovery Mode

Once the internal drive are properly formatted

Suggest using the 3 keyboard combo Option + Command + R

In Theory this may allow downloading the Most Recent version of macOS this computer Qualifies to run

macOS Ventura is compatible with these computers

My Colleague @BDAqua has the answer

On the off chance and from your earlier

The drive in the Bold Text would be the Top Level Drive

  • AppleAPFS Media (3.12TB showing as unutilized)
  • Apple HDD ST3000DM001 Media (3TB showing as unformatted)
  • Apple SSD SM0128L Media (121.33GB showing as unformated)

Also, be aware this is a Fusion Drive

Fusion in that, in the Magic of Apple

This computer has a Combination of a SSD Drive coupled to Rotational HD and Fused together ( the Apple Magic )

Should this Fusion process, if it fails, which normally does not happen

You can Fix this via the instruction in below link

Please can you advise how I re-format the internal drives?

I have search the Support pages from the community and cannot find any reference.

I have rebooted with Option+Command+R and it has offered me Ventura (as previously installed) which is great, but then cannot find a disc to install it on.

I did create a new start up disc on an external hard drive which boots fine on the machine but cannot work out if I can copy this to the internal discs.

Any help really appreciated.

Completed the above but now the AppleAPFS Media (3.12TB) has disappeared altogether from the list.

Check by showing all, it is just not showing. Have rebooted and still not showing. The others are and would let me install the iOs onto them.

What should I do?

  • Can the other disc be recovered from wherever it is or should I just reinstall the iOS on the Apple HDD ST3000DM001 Media (3TB) and hope I can sort out the other disc then?
  • Or is the other disc lost forever?

Yes - but when I went to install and it showed available discs - only the 2 or 3 was showing as available.

When I went back and went to disc utilities the AppleAPFS Media disc is not showing.

I will install on the HDD - I am not sure I have it in me to sort the rest out.

Just grateful to have to out of three showing as available.

Thank you for all your help to get me this far.
