iOS 26 won't be available as production software until September/October this year.

The only versions that are available "early" are beta-test versions that may have unfinished features, that may contain major bugs, and that may break apps you rely upon every day. You should install these only on spare phones, not on your main phone. It also might be a good idea not to connect them to your main Apple ID.

Be aware that the ASC Terms of Use preclude any discussion of beta-release software.

The most helpful step that we can offer to any user is to pay close attention to Apple's very strong advice to only install beta software on a spare phone, and not on a phone that you expect to be reliable.

Hi! Just a heads-up: right now, iOS 26 is still in limited internal testing, so it’s not yet available for all developer accounts to download directly via Settings. Apple typically rolls this out gradually, starting with a smaller group under invitation.

Then you need to have a compatible phone, and wait until the fall, when Apple releases it.

If by now, you have not figured out that it is in developer beta, and that installing a beta on your main phone that you rely upon every day is not a good idea, then you should not be installing betas.

That is the perfect indication that you should not be using the beta and have not read any of the precautions for its use:

• Complete data loss on removal without knowing the archived backup procedures.
• NEVER recommended to be installed on a primary device needed for daily use.
• Bugs are expected and many things will not work correctly.
• No support for the beta software.
• Removal requires a computer.

That is a very bad reason for installing a beta.

Do you have a spare phone that you can devote to running software that may be buggy and incomplete and break things you use now? If not, do you want to potentially break the apps you rely upon and lose all of your data just because you couldn’t be bothered to listen to Apple or to anyone else?

You do not download iOS 26 on the iPhone XS Max.

The production version of iOS 26 is not out yet – but more to the point, the iPhone XS Max is not on Apple's list of iPhones that will be compatible with iOS 26. For the iPhone XS Max, iOS 18 is the end of the line.
