Where is the Finder tree which appeared in the left dock?

The finder tree in the left dock, with downloads and some other apps, no longer appears.

What is happening? Is this e.g. a new feature, so that there is something specific I need to do for the finder tree to reappear?

A screenshot of what you see or don't see might be helpful.

"Finder tree... in the left dock"? Not really sure what that might mean but the sidebar.

To reveal items that would be listed below any subheading in the sidebar, hover the mouse cursor on the heading and click the caret to the right of the heading to turn it downward.

There is no "tree" implying hierarchy in the Finder Sidebar. It is single entry Favorites, iCloud, Locations, and Tags depending upon what you configured in the Finder Settings/Preferences.

If you have the Finder Sidebar showing and only Favorites appears at the top, pass your pointer over it and you will see a > symbol in the right edge. Click that and the Favorites will expand to show the individual folder locations.
