Believe this is due to an app in activity monitor remaining open. Not sure how to identify which app is causing the fan to be on constantly when i start up the imac

No problem.
The new Silicon Mac's, do not require an SMC reset like the old Intel Mac's.
Restarting/rebooting is all that is required.
If you have other weird issues, then Safe Mode is the next step to take.

Activity Monitor User Guide for Mac - Apple Support explains how to identify processor-intensive tasks.
The cooling fan is suppose to be running at the slow default speed of 1500rpm when the iMac is on.
If it running faster than the default speed when you wake or startup the iMac, then that maybe a problem.
Any suggested course of action?
Nothing if it is running at the default speed when the iMac is on.
If it is doing something different, please give a better description of what it is doing.
i had been rebooting the imac without unplugging the power socket. Having read that this is necessary to reset the SMC, I did this snd on rebooting the problem was resolved. Thanks for help given.
