Why does my clip-on keyboard produce odd characters and lock up in Safari on iPad?

When using the attachable keyboard when in Safari the cursor locks up, will not allow back-up or even enter. The only option is to break the connection by removing the keyboard and reattaching it. Also, for an unknown reason a variety of letters with accents and other differences like tildes and umlauts appear and are numbered 1,2,3,……. These also lock up the keyboard. I have cleaned the connections, gone through the Settngs App and Safari App and have not found an appropriate option. Pages and Numbers do not have these problems. The keyboard has been acting this way since I purchased it years ago.
