Why won't Preview open new files on High Sierra, even after resetting preferences?

In Mavericks on my 2011 iMac I had loads of documents open in Preview. I've just bought a 2017 iMac running High Sierra. I decided to close around half of the open documents, leaving around 18 open.

However, Preview won't open any more files. If I click a pdf, Preview comes to the fore, but the file isn't visible. If I hold the Preview Dock icon and choose 'Show All Windows', I see the 18 in a grid, but there is also a row of small icons across the bottom, showing not only the files I closed yesterday, but also the few I've tried to open but which don't appear.

I renamed the Application Support folder and the 2 preference plists so Preview wouldn't see them, and relaunched. Incredibly, the 18 documents reopened, I still couldn't open any new ones, and High Sierra did not recreate the Application Support and plist files!

I'm at my wits end. What to do?

The most recent macOS Preview version does not impose a limit on the number of files that can be simultaneously open. I did not happen to test High Sierra's version but I can if need be.

Quit the Preview app if it is open. Press and hold a Shift key while opening the Preview app from Applications or the Dock.

  • That action will open Preview without any previously opened documents.

Release the Shift key when Preview opens.

In that manner you can find the problematic document causing it to crash. Drag it to the Trash, or attempt to open it with some other app.

18 documents? It might be you have run into the natural limit based on how much RAM you have of how many documents it can open. Keep in mind, the Dock (The translucent toolbar on the bottom of the screen) merely shows the recently opened documents. Preview's sidebar will show you all the current opened documents in Preview. Apple menu (Apple logo in upper left corner) -> System Preferences -> General lets you pick number of recent documents it will created shortcuts for at a time, but these documents aren't actually open until they show in the Window menu or the sidebar of Preview.

If Preview won't open any documents even when it is the only application, and select "Show all windows" picking its icon from the Dock, it is possible the document is corrupted, or the drive is unhealthy. I would have a tech look at exactly what isn't appearing to behave correctly to verify if it is a systems issue or not.

Thanks for the reply. My 2011 iMac had 16GB RAM, this one has 32GB, so that's not the problem.

However, on the old one there was an image in the many open Preview documents that always caused Preview to crash if I clicked it from the Window menu - so I couldn't even select it to close it, and I just avoided it. On this Mac, when I clicked ‘Show All Windows’, that file was there and it was the only one which Preview opened from that bottom row. So I went ahead and deleted it in Finder having successfully closed it in Preview.

That hasn't entirely cured the problem. If Preview is open with its 18 files, it still won't show a new file when I double click in Finder. But, if Preview is not running, double clicking a file will launch Preview and this time the file is there along with the other 18. So as long as I don't have Preview permanently open (as I did in Mavericks), I can still view files.
