How can I delete files from iCloud without removing them from my MacBook Pro?

I think this should be a really simple procedure, but everything I've seen so far doesn't help.

I have files saved to my MacBook Pro. These have also been saved to iCloud. All I need is to access a list of iCloud files, delete some items from iCloud, but NOT from my MacBook. I have test-deleted a couple of files from iCloud, but that deletes the local files too!

You see, I don't need an iCloud back-up of my photos or writing or book collection database. I DO want my Calendar, Contacts, Messages on iCloud, so I can access them on different devices.

Anyone with any clear procedure I can try? I'd REALLY appreciate it.

When you want to keep files on your Mac, but remove them from from iCloud, drag the file from iCloud Drive to a local folder on your Mac, for example, create a folder "Saved iCloud File"in your user home folder.

Or are the files in your iCloud Photos Library? In that case you need to create a second Photos library on your MAc. Only one library at a time can sync with iCloud Photos. Import copies of the photos to a second library, before you remove the photos from your iCloud Photos Library.

Léonie, you are an absolute gem!

Three little but very significant words: "user home folder". Of course I'd seen them in other help files, but they didn't "click" until I read your reply. I tried on a couple of minor docs and it works.
