Can't convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPEG on Mac mini

I am trying to convert photos taken by an iPhone from the default heir format to jpeg to enable them to be viewed on a digital frame. When I try to export the photos in my Mac Mini or to a thumb drive the drop down menu shows they are already in jpeg format so the conversion does not occur. What am I missing?

What do you mean by "export the photos in my Mac Mini?" Are you using Photos' Export menu?

Edited pictures in Photos don't have a file format-- in fact, they are not files, at all. The file is created when you use export, so you can create a file with the features of your choice.

Using File>Export>Export nn Photos, you can choose the format that you prefer, including jpg. You may be able to save storage by exporting smaller files, as well, since on a digital frame you won't be needing the extra detail for editing.

If you use File>Export>Export Unmodified Originals, then you get the original files with their original format and without edits or added comments.

Let us know if this is (or isn't) what you are needing…

Hey Natch48,

What drop down menu are you referring to? Is it possible the photos were taken in JPEG format to begin with?

Go to settings > camera > format. If you’re on high efficiency, your photos are being taken in the HEIF/HEVC format. If it’s on most compatible, the photos are already being taken in JPEG format.

Gentlemen,

Thanks to both of you for your quick responses. I repeated my steps to learn that I was using a flawed thumbdrive from my work days (~ 15 yers ago). When I subbed a drive from more recent vintage the photos immediately converted to jpeg.
