Desktop disappeared from my MacBook Air

I was recently going through the storage on my iPhone and deleted a bunch of files that were stored in iCloud. Maybe an hour or two later, I was on my Mac air, when all of a sudden my entire desktop disappeared. All of the folders and documents that were on my desktop were created and saved on my desktop, so none of them were ever imported via iCloud.

I have seen the other threads about force quitting Finder, going in to the "desktop and dock" settings, and making sure the iCloud settings are not toggled under "Sync this Mac". None of those solutions worked.

Apparently I did not have anything backed up under Time Machine either.

I know the files and documents are somewhere on my desktop because I'm using over 96GB of its storage. Can anyone offer another solution? I'm freaking out

I get the "freaking out!" What you're describing makes me think that your Desktop folder was synced with iCloud Drive, and then that was turned off. When desktop syncing is turned off, a new, empty Desktop folder is created on the Mac, but all the files remain in a no-longer synced Desktop folder on iCloud Drive. Do you see a Desktop folder in iCloud Drive? Mine looks like this:

Is this possibly it? If you find the Desktop folder on you iCloud Drive, you can just copy the files from there to the Desktop folder in your user's folder.

Do you have Optimize Storage turned on? Do you have at least 10% of your Mac's memory free?
