Why does my iMac say Messenger is in use when I try to replace it?

I downloaded the newest Messenger app to the desktop of my iMac. When I drop the icon for the new version into my app window, it says this can't be done because "Messenger is in use." What am i doing wrong? Thank you!

Do you mean this Messenger App from Meta for Apple Computers and from the Apple Apps Store ?

The normal, the Application itself would auto update the existing application to the new version

Have you placed alias of this application on your Desktop

Control key and click the Old Alias

A sub-menu should appear and choose " Move to Trash "

Go to applications folder and make a new alias and move it to the Desktop

Create and remove aliases on Mac

Do as my colleague suggested

Restart in Safe Mode.

Hopefully, the restart in Safe Mode will eliminate the Older Messenger from starting when the computer starts

If and only if this does not work which is doubtful

There keyboard command together

Command + Option + Escape (⌘⌥⎋)

This should bring up a Force Quit pop up

Look for the running application and choose the currently running " Messenger "

Highlight it and choose Force Quit
