Pages, distance between image and caption text

I love using Pages—it's a fantastic program—but the lack of precise control over the spacing between an image and its caption is a significant limitation. As it stands, the caption feature becomes almost unusable because the default text inset doesn't allow the caption to sit close enough to the image.

If there's a workaround beyond the current inset settings, I'd greatly appreciate hearing about it. Otherwise, I strongly encourage Apple to consider adding a dedicated setting for adjusting image-to-caption distance. It would make the caption feature far more functional and consistent with the overall excellence of Pages, which is otherwise incredibly robust and thoughtfully designed.

Hi maurizio208,

How refreshing to hear positive feedback about Pages! I also love the thoughtful design and ease of use of Pages.

No, sorry, I can not find a way to change the spacing between an image and a caption.

This is a user-to-user forum and Apple does not participate apart from moderating posts. The Pages programers will not see your post.

In Pages, go to Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback > Feedback Type > Feature Request.

We are assured that Apple reads all feedback, but do not expect a reply. In my humble opinion, Apple set out to create Pages around the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Sir).

Regards,

Ian.

The old school method of captioning a photo was to insert the image and then a Text box below it appropriately positioned and scaled for the preferable caption treatment. This allows for your own separation decision between the Text box and the image before grouping both selections.

Apple was thoughtful to introduce a caption toggle, though it offers no user separation customization from the image.

I'll try the feedback option—thanks. And yes, it's nice to have the caption feature, though it's frustrating that the caption sits so far below the image.

Another big gripe: importing images. Every time I bring one in, I have to manually adjust the settings because Apple's defaults make images behave unpredictably—appearing, disappearing, or causing layout issues. I constantly have to go into the Arrange menu to change the settings to Stay on Page, Above and Below, and adjust the spacing to 5 or 6 (instead of the default 12, which leaves way too much space around the image).

I get that Apple likely kept these import defaults loose to allow flexibility, but without a global option to set my preferred defaults, I end up having to manually fix the same settings over and over. I’m currently working on a document for my students that has over 100 images—and having to adjust each one individually, despite using the same settings every time, is just nuts.

I’m always amazed at Apple’s brilliance in 99% of what they do—but then they make baffling decisions, like hiding the power switch under the Mac Mini or introducing these kinds of limitations in Pages. They seem so easy to fix, yet Apple, with all its talent and resources, just doesn’t bother.

Still, as a former Windows user, I have to say that the overall excellence of Apple—their powerful free software and user-friendly ecosystem—has been one of the true joys in my life (outside of these tiny little complaints of course).

When you insert an image into Pages, the default Arrange panel settings are Text Wrap > Automatic and Object Placement > Move with Text. Been this way for many years because Apple has no way of knowing how you actually want those settings for your intended image placement.

Though not an entire panacea, and to a certain extent, you could use a template with one or more media placeholders with the custom Arrange panel settings predefined for the individual placeholders to reduce your workload when placing images in the document.

We can only help you with those complaints that we know how to fix. Everything else is feedback to the Pages product team from the application menu. Since no Apple employees participate in these communities, things we cannot fix as fellow users won't be seen by Apple staff.

Thanks, totally get it why Apple would do that -- but you have to account for users who need to import lots of images or need lots of captions with the same settings and need to set on each import which as I've already mentioned, gets really tedious to adjust manually every time.

We're using more photos and videos than ever, and while Pages is so great for layout and publishing, it kind of loses that edge when simple things—like image import options or captioning—are harder than they need to be.

Thanks again for your place holder idea :)
