HDMI to USB-C ?

My old Canon HV20 HDV camcorder has an HDMI socket for connecting to a TV.

Is there such a thing as an HDMI to USB-C connecter to have the camera output video to the USB-C socket of a Mac.

I have got the usual USB-C to HDMI converter but that of course does not work as the signals are going in the wrong direction.

Mac mini, macOS 15.5

You need an HDMI-to-USB-C capture card. Despite the common name, it's not really a card but an inline converter. In Google or Amazon, search on that. A common "brand name" one is Elgato Cam Link. My team uses Magewell, but there are much cheaper ones that work OK.

Some newer cameras and wireless HDMI receivers have built-in UVC (USB Video Class) output, which is a special type of USB-C output that sends video data in a USB format that most newer computers recognize as a camera. If that output is available, it can eliminate the need for an HDMI-to-USB capture card.

You are both correct and I am an idiot!

For the past few hours I have been connecting my camera using an HDMI to USB-C connecter.

I have got 2 and the one I was using looked just like a capture card. When the truth finally dawned I made a frantic search for the capture card and of course couldn't find it for ages.

The interesting thing that I have discovered is that if you have an HDV or Mini-DV camcorder with an HDMI socket you can capture video from the tapes without the need for a FireWire connection so I can use my latest M series Macs without needing any FW/Thunderbolt connecters.
