I have used a USB capture card to capture some VHS tape but unfortunately the original 4:3 aspect ratio has been stretched to give a 16:9 image.
I tried to create a 640x480 project but the clip is still stretched when I drop it in the timeline.
Where am I going wrong?
Any suggestions?

You can also just scale down horizontally, i.e. change the X scale alone.
I think that scaling X to 75% should do it.

To be thorough:
1) add the clip to a 640x480 timeline
2) switch Spatial Conform to "Fill"
3) change the X scale (only X) to 75%
Is there a control in your USB capture card software that allows you to specify the aspect ratio? I seem to recall when I used MPEG Streamclip years ago that there were selections for aspect ratio that if set incorrectly would stretch the image, and then you were stuck and had to recapture with the correct settings.
I think the problem is because I used QT Player.
In OBS studio it looks as though I van set it to 4:3 before capturing.
I will test it later.
Could you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing in the Viewer in the 640x480 project?
I tried changing spacial conform from Fit to Fill but that chops off each side.

I don't think so. It's just plug and play as far as I can see.
I think the only thing you can do is to use the Distort function to pull up the corners to make the image conform to the 4:3 aspect.

However, I think I might be better using OBS as it can be configured to capture correctly in the first place and you are not tied to a canned .mov setting.
