I have an iMac running with Catalina - macOS 10.15.7. I’m not able to access the internet and assume that like Chrome, it’s no longer updating because of the older OS. Sound about right?

Try Firefox V 1.3.1 or Brave Browser V 1.6.9.
Otherwise it'll be time to upgrade your Mac. An excellent alternative to the new M4 24" iMac is the Mac Mini M4 with a 3rd party 27" - 32" 4K monitor w/speakers. That combination is $1417 which is $650 less than a similarly configured M4 24" iMac. I just got one and an extremely happy with it.
You have not told us what happens when you try to access the internet. Access requires two things - a browser and internet service with a modem. Have you accessed your internet provider to request help? Have you tried resetting the modem?
When your operating system is updated, the Safari browser is also done automatically. I don't think the problem is with two browsers at the same time. I suggest running the Disk Utility repair function. You may have to rerun it several times until an ok result is reported. You can also try a restart in the Safe Mode. It fixes a lot of problems. When restarting, hold down the Shift key. Be patient as this process can take up to several minutes while the OS is fixing itself. Then try your browser. Then restart normally.
FWIW, the latest Firefox 138.0.4 version is compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina (and higher):

The browsers would open then shut immediately. As it turns out, I was able to update the OS to Ventura. Will then try to update browsers and test.
