Spotlight indexing Time Machine disk

2020 M1 MacBook Air, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, MacOS 14.7.5 (Sonoma)

I notice that my Time Machine HDD shows activity even when TM is not running. I assume this is Spotlight indexing. I tried to exclude the disk from Spotlight and a popup message said I could not exclude a Time Machine disk.

What is going on here?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.7

Spotlight indexing of the Time Machine drive is how it is supposed to work. That's what is going on…
