Wifi won't turn on and won't show up in my network settings

My wifi won't turn on for anything. I tried going to the network settings to try and fix it but I had no luck. The only time I have wifi is when I connect it to the router directly. please help.

It looks like your wifi is turned on (or you would not have reached your router),

but you cannot connect to any websites. Is this your situation? Please clarify.

If I understood correctly, you probably have a DNS issue.

We need to know more.

What do you see in System Settings->Network?

Is Wifi turned on? Does it show a green, amber or red "light"?

Next, click "Details...", and then "DNS". Do you see something similar to the image below, with addresses in grey? Or some addresses in white? The grey means the address is added automatically by your server, and in most cases is what should appear (unless you know how to set up a specific DNS server address, and need to for some reason):

Let us know.

With your MBP not connected by Ethernet to your router give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

If that doesn't help shut down your modem, router and MBP and reboot them in this order: modem, router and then your MBP. See if that helps.
