How do I fix my iPhone 16 Pro overheating and battery drain issue?

Hi all, so on recently version of ios My iPhone 16 Pro is overheating. The battery doesn’t last long at all . It gets hot with simple uses like checking email , talking on the phone or even just YouTube or scrolling socials. On some games even I feel in my pocket that is hot when I am in game and forgot to exit the game. When I charge it now it constantly displays a message that reads “Charging will resume when iphone returns to normal temperature “ . It’s a little considering

Take it to the Apple Store or contact Apple Support for diagnostics. I wouldn't necessarily agree that the iPhone 16 handles heat better than an older phone as it contains much more advanced processors and will run warmer, but if you are seeing the heat warning and also from the erratic brightness problems you are experiencing, then there is something wrong that can only be addressed by Apple.

The exception where you may see the heat warning when there is not a problem is when the phone is left in the sun or possibly if you do have a processor intensive game running when the phone is in your pocket where there is no ventilation. It is normal for it to feel warm, but most do not see the heat message. Lobsterghost1 referenced the message seen by all when fast charging.

Is 305 charge cycles with battery health 92% good? I don’t think so

Depends on:

  • Phone model
  • If the battery has been previously replaced.
  • If you purchased the device used or refurbished.
  • Age of battery

For an iPhone 15 or newer, on average 305 charge cycles would be about 94% for a device purchased new from Apple. The drop is not exactly linear, and at this point it would be tracking slightly below average.

After you update your iPhone's iOS, it must re-index all your data on the new software. This is creating and sorting a searchable database of all your data. That also powers certain features such as Spotlight Search and Photos Search. During these processes while your iPhone is working extra hard, you can experience increased thermal temperatures, which is quite normal. The general rule of thumb for indexing to complete is 48-72 hours.

The term "overheating" is quite often used overly and incorrectly. As lobsterghost1 states, your iPhone is only considered "overheating" if it's beyond your standard operating temperature range. In this case your iPhone would display a temperature warning message and would prevent you from using it until it cooled down. But iPhones always are a little warmer during charging, that's just how it works. If you see a charging on hold, that means your iPhone is waiting to cool down to resume charging. But once again, neither one of those means your iPhone is overheating.

You can also see an increased battery drain. You can also see the brightness lower to prevent overheating.

I had the same problem last night, iPhone was so hot and battery draining 1 percent every 2 minutes, i went into battery settings and selected last 24 hours and looked for the app that was running in the background, for me it was Nike running club app. although it was closed it was using all of the phones processor and draining the battery.

So i deleted the app.

I also updated all apps but it seems this app was already updated.

First of all, the message when charging is NOT overheating. This is a new feature where you must be using a charging brick of at least 20w and we ALL get this message when the iPhone fast charges up to 80%, then it will rest and you'll see the message you see. The phone will continue charging up to either 100% (with Optimized Battery Charging) or the Charge Limit you may have set (if you are using Charge Limit). This is not something you should be concerned about as it's now a normal part of the charging process.

Now, when playing games, using the camera, watching YouTube videos, ALL make the battery work harder than an iPhone not doing anything. And when the battery is pushed harder, it naturally generates heat. It's called Thermal Dynamic Exchange and is also quite normal. The only time you should be concerned is if you see a Thermometer on your iPhone Screen during normal use, with a warning the phone must cool down before you can use it (again, this is completely different from the notification you see when you are fast charging your iPhone). If you aren't seeing a Thermometer on your screen, your phone may get warm, but it is NOT overheating.
