How can I read CDs on MacBook Air M3 without SuperDrive?

SuperDrive is not available. Apple does not offer any alternative. My old Pro has built in CD drive but Catalina cannot handle the software I need. Apple has left many customers in the lurch by not allowing the use of CDs with the new models. This is totally unacceptable. I have a lot of CDs with valuable information lost because such irresponsible quest for "modernity". Not all Mac users want to be constantly plugged in for streaming. Believe it or not there are places where connections online are not available or very expensive.

Some specific makes and models would be more helpful. I don't want to risk some cheap Chinese rubbish

I have one of these.

Other World Computing – 24X OWC Mercury Pro USB 3.2 (5Gb/s) Super-Multi DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support

This drive

  • Has its own power supply. Portable, bus-powered drives may have power-related issues like needing to be plugged into two USB ports to get enough power for reliable operation (especially when burning discs). The Apple USB SuperDrive only needed to be plugged into one port, but had a reputation for being finicky about power, and wanting to be plugged directly into a Mac, or into an Apple USB-C to USB adapter that was itself plugged directly into a Mac.
  • Has a detachable USB 3.0 B to USB-A cable. This lets you replace the cable, if, say, your cat chews it, or you want a longer cable, or one with a USB-C plug.
  • Has a replaceable power adapter.
  • Has a sturdy enclosure.

I did have to run a power strip up to the top of the back of my desk to plug the drive in.

There is a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray version, too.
