Ive had some support from Apple to try to resolve this but it seems to be a wider problem. Unable to play a podcast unless downloaded, and episodes not appearing when i click on a show. It did not resolve with the latest update as they hoped, so please- lets hope something is gonna be done!!

Same problem… in my case it started a couple of weeks ago. Apple support couln‘t help either, tried everything. App worked only after resetting the phone to factory settings, but then same problem after loading any type of backup. Currently, Apple Podcasts is basically useless on my phone. It works on my laptop with a webbrowser, though. Apple support tells me to wait for a global solution
Just found a solution in another thread. My Iphone was set to „Kölsch“ - a specific dialect of german. I changed it to german and for some reason Apple Podcasts started working again. Same seems to apply for english - try setting your phone to standard english.
THANK YOU!! This worked!!! So happy. I think my main language was english uk but Welsh was on the list also… i deleted welsh and also changed it to English USA and it worked 🙌🏻
