Why are my Safari "Favorites" greyed out on my iPad?

I have a 3rd generation IPad Air on IOS 18.5. Just recently all my Safari Favourites tiles have turned grey with only a large capital letter in them. I can still see my browsing history. How can I restore the icons? Thanks

Favorites icons in Safari showing as grey blocks iPad Mini5, 64gb, 18.4.1. Today on the Favorites screen, as seen in the screenshot below, all the icons are showing as grey blocks with a letter or number inside, instead of as regular color icons appropriate to the site. Same with the Suggestions. At one point, maybe half of the icons came back as usual, but later it was back to full grey. I tried powering down a couple of times. Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Safari favorites bar disapered after updating to IPad OS 17.7.7 The favorites bar is no longer visible on Safari. I have done a hard reset and also toggled off/on the setting under Settings/Safari/ “show favorites line” but still it is gone after the update to Ipad OS 17.7.7 yesterday 13th of May 2025
