You cannot use that 27" Retina iMac as a HDMI TV set for a device such as a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player, or a cable TV set-top box, or a PlayStation. It doesn't accept video input. If you plugged in a USB-C to HDMI adapter, you'd be plugging in an adapter designed to send HDMI video to an external display, not one which would support using the iMac as a display.
You can use the iMac with streaming video services such as Netflix, where the video is coming in over the Internet. If you do so, you may be interested in this Bluetooth remote control, whose description suggests that it is made for just such a purpose.

Your iMac is also new enough so that you can set it up as an AirPlay Receiver for AirPlay to Mac. This means that if you have an iPhone or an iPad, the iPhone or iPad could stream video to your iMac like it was streaming video to an Apple TV set-top box.

If your cable TV system lets you view cable channels on your iPhone, by installing their app and logging into your account, you might even be able to AirPlay cable TV programming from your iPhone to your iMac. Don't count on this offering high video quality, though.
