when I minimize messages a little green image shows on it in the dock

I have been trying to find out what this means for several days and I have been unable to find an answer. When I minimize the Messages App on my Mac, it shows up in the Dock with a little green Messages icon in the lower right corner. What does it mean?

Hello,

Thanks for sharing the screenshot! What you're seeing — the little green Messages icon overlaid in the bottom-right corner of the Messages app icon in your Mac’s Dock — is actually normal behaviour for macOS.

What It Means:

This green overlay icon is simply a visual indicator that the Messages app is currently open and minimized. It doesn’t mean there’s a new message, unread content, or an error. It’s part of Apple’s new Dock UI enhancements meant to make it clearer which apps are active, even if minimized.

Why It Happens:

When you minimize a window in macOS:

  • The app stays running in the background.
  • macOS sometimes overlay a small app icon (like the green Messages bubble) to distinguish minimized apps from fully closed ones.

So — nothing to worry about! It’s just macOS trying to keep things organized visually.

Let me know if you want help customising your Dock or Notifications settings too!

Best,

Oliver
