Unable to open Apple Music library on Windows 11

Newly subscribed to Apple Music. Works fine on Macbook, Iphone and in Windows as web player. I've installed the Microsoft desktop App and when I try to open it I get (See photo) "Your Library Could Not Be Opened. Something went wrong and your library could not be opened. Error code: -50.

The only option from here is "Quit". The background is the Apple Music app screen but I cannot access anything but "Quit". I have restarted my computer, reinstalled the Apple Music app from the Microsoft store and gone through task manager to uninstall any other Apple programs (there are none). Itunes works fine but I have exited the program while trying to get Apple Music to work. As I said the Apple Music web player works but only gives me a stereo output. I would hope the desktop app would allow for me to output Dolby Atmos as my computer and receiver are capable.

Hi,

Thanks very much for your response. I tried to do what you recommended but there is no Apple Music folder in my users - Music folder therefore there is no Music Library.musiclibrary folder that I can delete. There are iTunes folders (and library files) there. Also, the file system you mentioned is there for Apple TV (under Video) but there is nothing for Apple Music in the Music folder. I have searched my computer for these files as well to no avail. In addition I have used an uninstaller program to uninstall anything I could find to do with Apple including iTunes, Apple Music, Apple TV, etc. and removed everything including registry entries for all of these apps. I then reinstalled these apps and the other apps are working normally as before but I still get the same error message with Apple Music. I did find an entry on Reddit where someone had this exact same issue but the only response was a suggestion to do what you recommended. Thanks in advance for any further suggestions.

Limiting iTunes to audiobooks and podcasts is standard when Apple Music, Apple Devices, or Apple TV are installed. Uninstalling the newer apps should be sufficient, but you I suppose you might need to reboot and/or reinstall iTunes in some cases. Using a third party uninstaller rather than leaving things to the normal Windows app uninstaller may have created inconsistencies.

I got that path for the Apple Music library slightly wrong earlier. On my test box for this it is at \Music\Apple Music\Apple Music Library.musiclibrary, a slight variation from the Mac version.

OK, I stand corrected. The desktop version still does not work. I had inadvertently accessed the web player version instead. The web player version fine for most things but it does not allow for me to access my main music library through Apple Music or now iTunes since iTunes now only shows podcasts and audiobooks. This isn't a huge deal since I use Plex as a server so I can listen to everything in my library via Plex but I would like to see if Apple Music can play multichannel music through my Windows desktop because it's hooked up to my multichannel receiver and speakers. Also I simply do not give up easily when confronted with computer issues and would really love to figure this issue out. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Understood about iTunes being limited to audiobooks and podcasts when Apple Music is in use but because I still can't get Apple Music to work properly I have installed a different version of iTunes which lets me access music again. I have not added my library yet because it is quite large and takes hours to load and I want to get Apple Music working properly first. I'll be fine with having Apple Music eventually manage my MP3 files once we get it sorted out. My main music library is on the windows computer we are dealing with so using Apple Music would be best.

OK - I go to Users>(My User Name)> and there is no Music folder or Apple folders listed so, conversely, there is no Apple Music Library files to delete. I have searched my computer for anything like that and it doesn't find anything. I have installed, deleted and reinstalled Apple Music several times and there is never any Apple Music library file to be found. I have also tried to repair and reset Apple Music with the menu I get by right clicking on the app and selecting "app settings" when it is installed but neither help. For what it's worth when I click on Apple Music I get a message that says Itunes is running and to close it before continuing which I do. I click Apple Music to open it and get a Start Listening message and then it has me sign in. I then get the "Your Library Could Not Be Opened" Error -50 message. I've spent several hours now trying everything I can think of but to no avail. To be sure - Apple Music works fine on two other Windows machines as well as my Macbook Pro, iPhone and iPad so it's obviously something on this computer. Thanks again for any assistance.

Hi, well, I thought I had figured it out but the next day and currently I have not been able to get it to work so I basically have given up at this point and I have just been using the web player (online) version which does work. I would very much like to get the desktop version working but there is very little info out there about this issue. I wish I could be more helpful but that’s where I’m at.
