Sudden loss of access to camera, contacts, microphone, passwords, iCloud backups & WhatsApp data – iPhone behaving like a reset device

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone here can help me. I’m currently traveling in South America, and until a few days ago, my iPhone was working perfectly (purchased and set up in Europe).

Then, completely out of the blue, I lost access to many core features of the phone:

• I can’t access the camera, microphone, contacts, photos, or saved passwords
• WhatsApp shows no chats or contacts anymore – and all iCloud backups seem to be gone
• Even from my MacBook, I can no longer see any previous iCloud backups ( last one 9. may tho!! ) – as if they never existed

I didn’t change any settings, install updates, or receive any warnings. It feels like my phone partially reset itself or suddenly stopped recognizing me as the owner – yet I’m still signed in with my Apple ID, and the phone works normally in other ways.

Device info:

• iPhone 11 (64 GB, European model)
• iOS version: 18.2.1
• iCloud storage: Enough free space available (more than 1,5 TB)
• WhatsApp was always connected to iCloud and regularly backed up before this
• Also my last iPhone backup was on the 9th of may 2025

My questions:

1. Could my current location (South America) have triggered any of this?
2. Are there any known bugs or issues that might explain this behavior?
3. How can I recover my previous WhatsApp data, passwords and contacts?
4. How do I regain access to the camera, microphone, contacts, and other affected features?

It’s very unsettling to lose access to so many core functions all at once, especially without doing anything unusual. And it includes important information which I need for travelling. I’d truly appreciate any suggestions, experiences, or guidance.
