How do I prevent Numbers from automatically shifting cells when adding or removing columns/rows?

Can I stop Numbers moving everything around when I add or remove columns or rows?

I often have sufficient room to add a new column or row to a table yet Numbers insists on moving everything over or down which is not want I always want.

The opposite occurs when I remove a column or row.

Thank you for your help.

Numbers inserts entire rows or columns. In Excel, "Insert" also lets you insert a single cell and the rest of the row/column moves over/down to accommodate it. If that is what you are asking about, Numbers does not have that. But you can still do it.

  1. Select all of the cells to the right or below the cell you want to "insert". You can use Command Shift and an arrow key to select all cells from the currently selected one to the edge of the table.
  2. Click and hold in the selection box
  3. Drag them over/down to create a blank cell and let go. Formulas that referenced any of those cells will adjust to point to the cells in their new locations. A new column or row will be added at the edge of the table to accommodate the rightmost/bottom cell that got moved.

The moderator retitled my original title and has caused some confusion.

I never meant cells. This is the first line of my original post which was also the title.

I posted a few minutes ago to point out that the moderator incorrectly retitled my question. I was not asking about cells, I was asking about moving tables and charts

It seems that Numbers is intent on maintain the space between adjacent tables or charts when adding a column even if there is room for the additional column without moving the tables. This in turn causes other align ment issues.

In this first screenshot Table 2 has room to the right. (Table 1 is just for reference)

In this second screenshot I have inserted an additional column in Table 2 but I want to stop Table 3 moving right, there is no need, there is plenty of room for the additional column.

I hope this better explains my problem.

not want I always want.

Could you explain what behavior you want?

To insert a column you don't think Numbers should make room for the new column?

When you remove a column you don't think Numbers should, well, remove the column?

To prevent Numbers from automatically shifting cells when adding or removing columns/rows, you can freeze rows or columns where you want them to stay in place. This feature is available in the Arrange menu under "Freeze Rows" or "Freeze Columns."
