PPC iMac G5 / mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger / Internet Issues

Hi ...

Got this PPC iMac G5 running OS X Tiger 10.4.11 .

I have Internet sharing from my Mac Pro, that's running OS X Sequoia .

The internet to the Mac Pro comes via Wi-Fi tethering from my LG Android Phone (V40 ThinQ) ...

The Mac Pro get's its' Internet via a USB Wi-Fi - dongle .

Now,

I have internet sharing on from the Mac Pro (Wi-Fi to Ethernet) and on the PPC it's displayed, that the IP is "working" and I should be able to connect to the internet .

However ... When I run the diagnostics it shows red / failed on internet and on the last option on the row

(can't remember its' name though, at the moment .) .

When I try to reach e.g Google the browsers (Safari and AquaFox tested) both time out before getting to the page .

I wonder, what could be the issue here ...

I managed to get internet working earlier, when I was running OS X 10.5 Leopard on the same G5 .

Now, I'm totally facing a dead end . ():

I'd propably should invest in some kind of wired USB - accessory !?!

What would you folks here recommend for such ?

You are rolling the dice as to whether that ASUS WiFi adapter will be compatible with the ancient USB ports on that PPC Mac, or that the ASUS adapter comes with mandatory drivers that are not compatible with a PPC architecture.

Regarding the wireless connection per se: As you already know, a USB Wi-Fi adapter connected to a USB port of the G5 would require a special driver. Not many Wi-Fi adapters support old Mac OS X systems, but an older version of Edimax EW-7811Un (plain, not V2) once appeared to have a 10.4 driver.

In order to avoid the driver problem a better way may be to connect a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as Linksys WET610N) to the Ethernet port of an old Mac computer. A more modern variant of this could be to use a Wi-Fi range extender (perhaps something similar to TP-Link RE200 or Edimax EW-7438RPn Mini) with an Ethernet port and Ethernet bridge capabilities (operating in a Wi-Fi adapter/client mode). This solution does not normally require special software/drivers. The setup can usually be carried out via a web browser (if necessary, on a newer computer). Modern security standards are typically supported.

The second problem is that browsers compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger are not capable of handling modern (secure, https) web pages, as Servant of Cats pointed out. You can really only expect the few remaining http sites to work (one example would be knubbelmac.de).

Hi ...

Thanks for your reply . (:

I just placed an order for a ASUS USB-N10 Nano B1 WiFi adapter

What do you think, would it do the trick ... Android Phone Wi-Fi tethering to G5 via Wi-Fi ?

In add ...

On some pages it's stated, that the ASUS - Dongle is only for  Mac OS X 10.9 to 10.14

and on some other pages it's said, that supported OS X versions are ;

Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks .

What do you think ... does it work on 10.4.11 Tiger ?

I found this old A-Link NA1GU v2.0 Wired USB-Ethernet adapter back on a shelf .

I installed the drivers from the original CD-rom and it had drivers way back to 10.3 Panther .

System Prefs informed, that a new network device was found ... but also stated, that no cable was connected, though it was . What's more peculiar ... none of the leds on the device show "any kind of life" .

Please some HELP in here .
