Wired headphones do not work for calls on iPhone mini 13

I just got an iPhone 13 mini running iOS 18.4.1 and wired headphones work fine for everything except calls. Media, Zoom, etc ok. The phone app including voicemail doesn’t recognize that headphones are connected for audio or mic. I’ve tried Apple lightning to 3.5mm adapter with 3rd party headphones and Apple headphones with a lightning connector and have the same problem. I’ve seen similar issues from others but none of the proposed solutions worked for me.

I don’t see a “connected to headphones” button in the Headphone Safety settings

I don’t think it’s a connection issue because the headphones work fine for other media/apps just not calls and they work fine for calls on other iPhones.

I don’t think any of these address my issue which is that the phone app doesn’t recognize that headphones are connected even though other apps do. If I go to the control panel when listening to music for example, I see the headphones as an audio option. If I go to the control panel while on a call or listening to voicemail, I only see the iPhone earpiece and speakers as options.

Earphones not Working:

Control Panel is part of MS Windows. So, are you using a PC here for the calls though pairing? Or are you referring to Settings?

Incompatibility:

Not all earphones are intended for calling. I would research the model, and see if they are made for calling. As for which adapter to use, I suggest going Apple-for-Apple, as it is intended to get this to work for calling.

Check if the "Connected to Headphones" toggle is enabled when using the 3.5mm Lightning adapter: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety. If you see the toggle off, try toggling it on when headphones are connected.

Other than that, it sounds like that there might be a physical connection issue. Maybe a loose connection?

Test with another adapter or with different headphones. You can also test your headphones on a different device to see if they work, e.g. a MacBook

Update: old adapter from Apple - doesn’t work, new adapter from Amazon- doesn’t work, new adapter from Best Buy (insignia brand) DOES work. So some iOS update must not be compatible with the old Apple adapter chips and some of the new chips from others. Crazy but 🤷‍♂️
