Issue with Absolute Value Rendering in Pages Equations (PDF Export)

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing an unusual behavior in Pages for Mac (latest available version).

When I insert math equations using LaTeX, everything looks correct inside the editor, but some symbols — particularly the absolute value bars — disappear or fail to render properly in the exported PDF.

Details:

  • If I use |x|, \vert x \vert, or \lvert x \rvert, the equations appear fine in Pages, but the bars are missing in the exported PDF.
  • However, when I use \left| x \right| the symbols render correctly in both the editor and the PDF.

Question:

Is this a known issue? Is there any official guidance on which LaTeX commands are fully supported by Pages, both for display and for PDF export?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Best regards,

Daniele

Using Pages v14.4 (current) on macOS Sequoia v15.4.1, I have no issue rendering absolute value symbology in Pages or the exported PDF (shown below):

x = \vert x \vert

Pages incorporates a translator that converts minimal LaTeX (or MathML) source into an embedded MathML equation. That downloadable blahtex translator manual (PDF) link can be found in the following Apple article:

You are entirely at the mercy of accepted syntax by the blahtex translator. If you need more, then consider the third-party Overleaf solution for better La/TeX support.
