The sites that I use for purchases always used to show a padlock symbol and I have always been advised to check for the symbol before making any transactions. However, none of the websites now show the padlock?
I use Safari. Should I be worried?

Connections are secure unless otherwise noted; one which isn't will have Not Secure listed in the address bar. If desired, choose Connection Security Details from the Safari menu.

Presumably, that icon was removed because its presence became unnecessary.
