why no option to group stacks by *name*?

It seems the option to group stacks on desktop (Macbook Air) disappeared a while ago.

What am I missing here?

I’m a simple-minded person and I just need my files and folders arranged by name, not date added or tag, etc etc

Just alphabetical order of name seems most user-friendly for a lot of people, wondering where it went

Using and grouping desktop stacks is still a thing in macOS. It's still there on my various Macs running Sequoia.

Can't say why there is no grouping by "Name" though. Seems like an oversight to me.

You can overcome this by keeping your files in folders, then they can be sorted by name.

Also, if you keep your misc files in a folder then you can also sort and group those files by type, among other things.

I use Stack By: Kind and Sort By: Name

When I do this, the folders on the desktop are sorted alphabetically, and so then are the files that are stacked. By that I mean when I click a stack those files are spread out on the desktop in alpha order - or Date or Kind or Tags, depending on what I've selected.

The stacks themselves do maintain an alpha order on the desktop - more or less. Though not perfect, at least the small handful of stacks I have - five - don't rearrange themselves willy-nilly.

Arranging them is done by right-click.
This used to include option of Name.
It no longer does.

I don't recall that it was ever an option. I reviewed the user guide all the way back to Monterey and they all gave the same information:

You can group stacks by kind (such as images or PDFs), date (such as Date Created or Date Last Opened), or Finder tags.

No mention is made of being able to group them by name.

You can let Apple know that you think it's something that should be included here:

Great - Command-J (⌘J) gave me view options with Name as an option, and that arranges the *folders* on the desktop by name.

That helps.

This makes no sense. Where did the Name option go?
