Adobe RAW no longer compatible

I just got a new Nikon Z5II. I had a Z5 and raw files opened in Adobe RAW. But not with the Z5II. I am now told that CR17 is not compatible and that I must use CR14. But even that doesn't work. I am running Monterey 12.7.6.

Adobe does not use Apple's Raw conversion library. They use their own. So Apple's list of supported Raw format is relevant to what you'll see in Preview, Finder, etc. – but you need to look at Adobe's Support articles when it comes to Photoshop and other Adobe applications.

Adobe – Cameras supported by Camera Raw

It appears that Adobe does support the Nikon "Z 5 2"

  • Raw image file name extension: NEF
  • Camera matching profile available: Yes
  • Minimum Camera Raw plug-in version required: 17.3
  • Minimum Lightroom [cloud] version required: 8.3
  • Minimum Lightroom Classic version required: 14.3

Unfortunately, you are running Monterey. Adobe has a policy of supporting only "the most recent three" - of which Monterey is not one. And while you still can run Photoshop on Monterey, Adobe's support page says

Adobe – Photoshop system requirements

"Adobe Camera Raw (version 17.0 and later) is not supported on macOS 12.x; we recommend updating to a later version of the OS for ACR support."

What is the hardware model year of your 27" iMac? That will determine if you can upgrade to Ventura (or better) – which is what you would need to do to run a version of Adobe Camera Raw that might support the Nikon Z5 II.

Using the Adobe Digital Negative Converter (DNG Converter) appears to be out.

Adobe – Digital Negative Converter

The current version might be able to read Nikon Z5 II files and convert them to an older .DNG format that you could use with your version of Photoshop. But even though Adobe says that "Adobe provides backwards compatibility for the latest cameras for use in older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, After Effects, and Photoshop Elements through the DNG Converter, the converter requires Ventura or later …

I knew the end was coming. I had warned my accountant in February that I probably would be buying a new computer, a new camera and a new iPhone this year (all business expenses). All that's left to be purchased is the computer. Fortunately, I have a fairly new Macbook Pro, which will process my raw photos so I can hold off on the desktop until this one groans to a stop. Thanks for your input. It's good to know there are good people willing to help folks like me.
