Cleaning up a 2-ch field recording, that's all I need to do.

Hi all,

My DAW needs are quite simple. I go out and make a recording of a chamber ensemble, for instance. It includes dead periods, narration, and extended applause, among other things that need to be separated from the music. I record at a conservative level so as to avoid clipping. Back home, I want to 1. Eliminate the non-music parts. 2. Fade in and fade out the clips I want to save. 3. Raise the overall gain of the recording to just hit 0.0 dB on the highest peak. 4. Export to Compact Disk or "Track" files in MP3, etc. I avoid the use of compression, equalization, echo, etc.; I have buttons on my entertainment system for that.

With Garage Band and most of the alternatives I've looked at, I probably need about 1% of what the app can do. I need help on how to cut to the chase, clear the clutter, etc., so I'm not distracted by "Instruments", "plugins", metronomes, and the like. Maybe Garage Band isn't the proper tool, but I've decided to give it a good look because it's native to the Mac. Can you suggest how to approach this?

Bonus question is whether I can expect to be able to do "timed record start" and "timed stop/save".

I learned my way around Audacity, but it isn't stable on my latest Mac. So, I'm on this app excursion.

Regards,

Jerry

Thanks Keith,

I will occasionally update Audacity and check for improvements. Good suggestion.

For now I’ve reverted to my 2018 MBP setup with a stable version of Audacity.

My main problem with GB is that my 80 y.o. eyes have difficulty with the graphics and I make mistakes, get lost , etc. I inadvertently pull the timeline around when I’m trying to make a selection and vice versa. Or I accidentally create a loop and can’t figure out how to clear it. Fade in and fade out apparently require some kind of macro, I guess. Not a simple menu action on a selection as with Audacity.

I love Audacity in the version where it’s not crashing so frequently. There’s nothing I would add to it.

Have you used to "lock" feature on the tracks? I have to do that or I end up moving stuff around by accident too. iOS for iPad doesn't have "lock" and I slide things around all the time, so I have to frequently make backups of the songs, so if I screw something up too bad I can just go to it.

fg,

Sounds like a good tip, locking the tracks. I'll check that out. I appreciate your chiming in to help me out.

I would really like to like GB, an Apple App on an Apple Device. Maybe I'll have a breakthrough if I keep at it. Wishful thinking to hope GB or any other app will get simpler to use with time! Only the user can hope to get better.

What you meant by "Free" occurred to me after I clicked the "Post" button. I tried to edit the post and got the "Try again later." error message and didn't get back to it.

"Large Monitor" is the answer for many problems at my age! Just the thought of doing any of this on an iOS device makes me cringe.

I got a chuckle out of one YouTube video about GB. The author/presenter said his 5 year old kid learned Garage Band, by himself, while riding in the back of the car with an iPad. Proves how far I've regressed.

Your monitor tip makes me think about how I have my new-ish iMac configured. There may be "Accessibility > Display" settings that I should adjust, as I did with the 2018 MBP so long ago that I take the settings for granted.
