How do I see past notifications on my Mac?

The notifications vanish as soon as I open the notification sidebar. I don't have time to read or react to them. I can't find a setting for Persistent Notifications or anything like that.

On my Android, you can see and interact with the older notifications, even if you dismissed them.

Is there a setting I'm missing?

Is there an app? unlikely since my Mac is old. I'm saving up for a new one, but this is it for now.
