How to fix 'Circle Slash' page and partition corruption on MacBook Pro (2011) Intel?

I was originally able to get the mac from macos x lion in increments to macos catalina i think. it updated and then i got the circle slash page which indicates an unusable version of macos and ran disk utility on hard drive and it said there was corruption in partition? i tried first aid and it didn't work said i had to run disk utility in recovery mode which is how booted the computer in recovery mode. tried to download os from browser but not enough memory and i don't want to go deleting crap all willy nilly. help i'm a windows guy this is foreign to me.

A 2011 model year MacBook Pro can be updated to run High Sierra. Later macOS versions such as Catalina will not run on it. If you (somehow) managed to install Catalina (which is not possible to accomplish normally) you will need to erase that Mac and start from the beginning.

Ideally you should boot from its original, grey, System Install DVD. That and its matching Applications Install DVD need to accompany the Macs they shipped with from cradle to grave. Assuming you no longer have it, recovery becomes problematic. Start here: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support. Follow the instructions to use Disk Utility to erase its startup disk, and then proceed to reinstall whatever operating system can be installed.
