How to use Apple Pencil 2nd gen with USB-C devices?

When Support helped me to replace my lost apple pencil 2nd gen just yesterday, the only option was a apple pencil USB-C (Pro and ipad dont fit).

Im just starting to mess with and already I’ve found you can’t magnet to ipad for power, you need a cable. AND double-tapping to toggle eraser and writing tool doesnt work anymore?

What am I missing please?

Here’s the deal: the USB-C Apple Pencil is more like a budget-friendly compromise. It was designed to be compatible with a wider range of iPads (especially the newer base-model ones that have USB-C and don’t support magnetic charging or pairing). But with that broader compatibility, Apple dropped a few advanced features—like pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing/charging, and the double-tap gesture for switching tools. So yeah, no double-tap = no quick eraser switch, and no magnetic charging = you’ll need to use a USB-C cable (preferably with a USB-C to Pencil adapter) to charge and pair it.

Since you’re using an iPad Pro that supports the 2nd Gen Pencil, that’s the only model that gives you full features like magnetic charging and double-tap. The USB-C Pencil just isn’t a 1:1 replacement—it’s a separate product altogether. Honestly, if your iPad is 2nd Gen Pencil-compatible, you might want to push back and request the correct replacement.

(sorry if this post is a repeat, but I don't see my reply anywhere?) Which said:

So are there any more advanced features in addition to: "—like pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing/charging, and the double-tap gesture for switching tools. " ...?

I'm hoping there are at least a few more, considering the $50 price difference. I checked the Apple iPencil 2nd Gen product page, and find myself feeling a little silly for my initial purchase. Sooo maybe this is actually working out for the best?

THANK YOU for taking the time and effort to help and doing so quickly. It is very much appreciated. !

That's it. Perfect. (gotta go figure out this HOVER feature) . As I am not an artist (unemployed Instructional Learning Experience Designer 😟) Everything in a nutshell.

I think is thread is absolutely the Best "customer service" interaction I've had in years! And then, are you like the SME Of Apple Pencils? Or just a great researcher. If Apple isn't paying you... it would be shameful.

Oh man, I really hope you aren't actually an AI chatbot!

SUPER VERY MUCH THANK YOU !

We are all just fellow Apple-product users trying to help others with their Apple devices. There are folks here that have a wide variety of backgrounds in technology, or just a seasoned experience in using Apple products that want others to enjoy them as well.

No, I don't consider myself a SME, especially when it comes to Apple Pencils. My expertise has been in the networking branch of computing and where I started being actively involved in this forum back in 2006. I encourage you visit us often. Better still, as you find yourself, becoming an "expert," come back to help others with the solutions you found worked for you.

... and no, I'm definitely not an AI. Too old for that!
