How do I create an iTunes library ITL file for recovery and locate missing album folders?

SO.. the issues keep coming :-

  1. Here's my first question: I had a corruption of iTunes and it was recommended to ( HOLD Shift/Click on Itunes/select library) .. indeed that worked but it would only open a default library with one purchased song (that is all I have) and the hihjacked U2 album. I lost over 100,000 songs and a massive amount of work from over quite a few years. I was able to find an older 'previous iTunes Library' , opened it but it went back to 2018, far from up to date, many recent albums and songs lost.(I do have a backup of all my music though) I have used that 'previousiTunes library' to rebuild my playlists and Library. NOW.. here's the thing. IF.. i have another issue and need to use a "previous iTunes library' to recover my work I can't . Why? Because there is NO 'previous itunes library' that represents what I have presently.

My question is simple: How do i create a library ITL file for recovery purposes. There is only one iTunes

Music database File {19kb} in the iTunes folder. NO itl file. NO previous itunes library file.

SO.. i have 5757 albums now in a rebuilt iTunes. My iTunes Media folder is in E:\Music\iTunes. In that

directory I have 3 folders. (Automatically Add to iTunes), (iTunes) & (Music) and ( .iTunes Preferences).

(Automatically Add to iTunes) is empty.

(iTunes) has 125 Folders. within those for example David Bowie holds 1 Folder with 1 song in it. In iTunes there are actually 17 Bowie albums with 220 songs.

(Music) has 1 folder Klaatu with 1 album in it. 8 songs. As in iTunes.

The question is where are the missing 5600+ folders/albums hiding?

YES.. the application does open OKAY when exited and reopened.

Again Apple can't help. So I come to the Community.

Any advice or direction would HIGHLY appreciated. I am reluctant to turn my PC off as who know what might happen to a huge amount of work.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Additional .itl files are saved in a Previous iTunes Libraries folder when and if an update to iTunes changes the internal structure of the .itl file. If you don't have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder where you are looking you might not be looking at the path of your previously active iTunes library, which is the one that I would expect to get opened most often, and is most likely to have been updated at some point. For example if you've moved the library from one computer to another your active .itl library could have been at say E:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl rather than C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl which is the default path. You could search the whole computer for files of the form *.itl to make sure you haven't overlooked a more complete backup of your library.

File > Add Folder to Library can be used to add all of the content of your media folder to an otherwise empty library, that may or may not be displaying your purchase history in the cloud. If you've already imported all of your media then there is no need to do that again. Playlists are only held in the .itl so reimporting doesn't rebuild those.

You can copy and paste your .itl file when iTunes is closed in order to create a backup copy that you could go back to at a later date if needed. For a more complete approach that covers the media as well see Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy - Apple Community.

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community. A key detail is that you cannot simply click on files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder to open them, you must hold shift while launching iTunes and use the Choose Library... option. Ideally you want your active library in the main iTunes folder and called iTunes Library.itl which is why I suggest copying and renaming the .itl files from the outset. You might also have a .tmp file that holds the last known good copy of your lost library. If all else fails you can import the tracks you have into an empty library with File > Add Folder to Library. The tracks in your media folder aren't discovered automatically, you have to do something, however doing this won't restore playlists, ratings, play counts, playlists, etc. so restore an earlier library file if you can.

Hi turingest2,

Thanks for the reply.

I am a ware of the process for opening a 'Previous iTunes Library'. THAT is the issue! There is NO Previous iTunes Library .itl file in the folder. There is nothing to rename. OR I am usure what you are saying I should copy/rename.

File > Add Folder to Library does not do anything for me.

I am at a loss. I asked an apple expert.. they couldn't tell me how , when or why a 'Previous iTunes Library' is created.
