2017 iMac not recognizing external monitor - 2025 updates?

I've inherited this Mac and would like to set up an external monitor.

Apparently, prior to the Ventura update, it worked fine and from internet searches, it was not an uncommon problem - but there never seemed to be a specific fix.

This old thread for example, never resolved: 2017 iMac not recognizing external monitor - Apple Community

Hardware:

iMac Retina 5k 2017

OS: Ventura 13.7.3

External Monitor:

BENQ (worked previously)

Cables: Firewire to HDMI.

Tried:

Everything this person on Reddit tried: https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/12uxn2p/imac_no_longer_recognizing_external_monitor_after/

Other than wiping/reinstalling, as per this, which I'd rather not do for obvious reaosns: "I ended up having to erase my hard drive and reinstall and earlier version of the Mac OS. I went with Monterey, one back from Ventura. It worked."

Thanks in advance.

New Mac User - yes - using wife's old iMac. So we bought new cables. Guess what - it worked. It was just a weird coincidence apparently - she upgraded, but the cable stopped working. Make that make sense. So all good. Thanks for your time.

Recent versions of macOS are reportedly picky about display transmission errors – as in, they don't want to see any and will cut resolution, or cut video signal, if they do. This sometimes shows up when people are using long cables (e.g., 6+ feet instead of 3 feet or less). Or when people are trying to use old Apple Thunderbolt Displays whose built-in cables are a bit flaky and "worked" with old Macs but not with new ones.

Possibly the same thing was going on here.
