Why is my iPhone not appearing on my Mac desktop?

I am sure that when connecting my iPhone in the past, it would appear on the desktop. This is no longer the case. I have tried it with 2 different USB-A connectors, as well as a USB-C but no dice. iPhone mirroring works, however. Many thanks for any advice.
