Can Apple Restore iCloud Drive to a Previous Date? (WhatsApp Backup Overwritten)

Dear Apple Community,

On April 13, 2025, my iPhone encountered an issue during a routine iOS update, which resulted in a full device restore. During setup, I mistakenly skipped the WhatsApp restore prompt because I believed I had lost my end-to-end encryption key.

I later realized that I did in fact have the key saved. However, by that time, WhatsApp had already created a new backup, which permanently overwrote the original encrypted backup stored in iCloud Drive.

I am not asking for decryption assistance — I have the encryption key. What I am trying to understand is: Does Apple have the ability to restore iCloud Drive (not iCloud Backup) to a previous state — specifically to how it was before April 13?

I know iCloud Drive does not offer manual versioning or file history on the user side, but I’m asking whether Apple internally retains snapshots of Drive containers (such as WhatsApp’s) that can be recovered in special cases.

If anyone has experience with this kind of data recovery, or insight into how Apple may handle it internally, I would truly appreciate any information.

Thank you.

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 18
