Is that 40-80% battery range strategy actually best?

Hi,

I need to see your thoughts and experience on this.

for all of my time since 2008, I never worried about the battery. I always charged until 100% practically daily. I even had 0 to 100 often.

honestly even though my iPad battery degraded after 8 years, it didn’t seem to be terrible.

so now, I’ve started to try this 40-80% strategy honestly only to be let down drastically. I have an iPhone 11. Have it for a year and four months. I used it in the first year like always, charge to 100, not thinking of this strategy. Within one year I reached 96% maximum capacity which I don’t think is that bad based on how much I used it. If anything, going down to 96% might equal 4 months usage in Apple’s mind. the last 2 months I started doing 40-80%, sometimes turning it off at 50% range which I hear is best. I also turn it off all night too. After a month of this process it went down to 95%, and then shockingly, one day later! Went down to 94%.

leaving me surprised. So now I’m just hoping not to suddenly see 93%.

however you can see why I’m questioning this 40-80 process.

would appreciate any thoughts or stories about your battery handling

The end game goal is just to keep these old original batteries at their longest possible usage time instead of shortening it from bad handling. The reason why I can’t just carelessly use it and replace it is because they’re iPhone 6s Plus and the battery is not available anymore. Only third party sellers making what seems to be not exaclty like apple’s original, even though they claim it to be. So I need to take care of my battery by developing the smartest handling method. I’m at 94,89-86% capacity on a few different phones and want to keep it as long as possible. Already has been many years used but some not by me. So, just want to use it right.

many are strict about this with lithium batteries. Apple even sends you 3 links on this to read and learn it’s best handling strategy. I personally have been trying it and was disappointed. So I’m looking for people's experiences following this idea to see if it really makes a difference in the end. Because my experience shows the contrary so far.

also, I won’t buy any new iPhones. I stopped at 11 but prefer before that and am not interested in future iPhones. I have 5,6,8,10,11

I have been a long been a supporter of simply using Optimized Charging and charge your phone all night, every night. After it has learned your schedule, when you wake up in the morning you will have a 100% charge ready for you and in most cases should be lasting all day. There is no battery anxiety and constantly trying to control the charging behavior for an unknown improvement in the life of the battery. I would not recommend shutting it off at night.

That is just my opinion and I am sure there will be others too. I have seen reports of users going to great lengths in the name of battery life that just does not make sense to me. Some of these are:

  • Using Low Power mode frequently
  • Dimming the screen brightness
  • Turning off Wifi when not needed
  • Turning of Bluetooth when not needed
  • Using Airplane mode and use WiFi to reduce cellular power
  • Turning the volume down
  • Turning off Background App Refresh

To me it is simple, use your phone the way it is the most convenient for you and when the Battery Health drops below 80%, then replace the battery. No need to cripple your phone or increase your anxiety.

So, total battery life is more important than usability, easy access to all the features and services? Not looking for a debate, just trying to understand what you might want to turn off, delete, etc.

Myself, personally, there are features that make using my iPhone more enjoyable and more productive. I wouldn’t want to lose those features just to extend my battery life a few months.

I’ve also used third party batteries as replacement and they’ve worked fine in most cases. I’m not understanding your response behind not using third party batteries.

Apple has never recommended anything like a 40-80 process. Where did you get the information that you are asking about? Do you have a link to a support document regarding this?

You can find countless "strategies" on the Internet about a "best" way to handle battery charging. I saw one article the other day that recommended charging when the battery was down to 34% and not letting the charge get above 78%.

If your goal is to find a single "best" strategy regarding the battery on your iPhone(s), I think you are going to be disappointed.....and likely even more confused.

40-80% charging habit only leaves you with 40% of the iPhone’s battery, wasting the other 60%. You also have to charge your iPhone more often. Most senior members here don’t use Charge Limit because it is claimed to be a gimmick. It still charges to 100% occasionally. And you don’t start your day with a full charge. Also your iPhone already manages your battery around your usage and conditions, ensuring battery longevity. The best charging habit is with Optimized Battery Charging. You charge all night, every night. Once it learns your habit, it will put charging on hold in the night until you need to use it. So when you wake up, you’ll have 100%.

You state after 1 year your battery health hit 96%. It’s supposed to drop 1% per month. That means you were far exceeding the manufacturers average, which is a good thing. Under average decline it should have been at 88%. You said the last two months it rapidly dropped to 94%. While it may seem detrimental, you are still above the manufacturers average and have an outperforming battery. Also note that battery health decline is not linear. You will see sporadic holds and falls.
