MacOS ventura boot drive for iMac 2017

Hi everyone I have been using BigSur to operate my iMac 2017 via external SSD since it just fails to work if I try to run to upgrade it Monetrey or Ventura.

I was thinking of getting a new SSD NVMe internal one and get enclosure but my question is does this work too run MacOS Ventura for iMac 2017? And any cheap brand that would make it work?

A 2017 iMac should be able to update to Ventura just fine.

There are a number of drives out there that will work with it.

What is your specific concept of "cheap"? You can get a good quality 500GB NVMe for around $100 USD from reputable sources such as OWC with good warranty and support, or a cheaper no-name alternative which may or may not work or cause issues from places like Amazon for around $50 USD.

Also note, that installing the drive internally, will require complete disassembly of the iMac and removal of the screen and re-attachment, which is not a simple job to attempt since it will require new adhesive strips for the screen, and a very careful removal of the glass which can easily break.

So its more like an external SSD drive, but I realised what I wrote is somewhat confusing:

'getting a new SSD NVMe internal one and get enclosure '

I just meant get an internal SSD NVme and you can get an adapter to turn it into an external drive since as you said replacing one internally is way to complex and out of my technical skills.

However I am just looking for recommendation on which brand is good.
