What to do when Time Machine files are inaccessible?

I have a couple of critical files that I had on a now defunct old computer of mine. It was backed up by Time Machine but I can no longer access them. When I try to open the Documents folder they were in I am getting the message

"The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

Is there a way I can open these files?

One suggestion:

Try double-clicking that "Documents" folder and choose "Get Info" from the drop-down menu

A small window opens with info. on the folder.

At the bottom: See "Sharing & Permissions"

See if you can click the lock icon, enter the Mac password, and make changes

NB: If it's not possible to make changes :

you may want to try dragging the Folder to the Desktop, and trying again with that copy on your Mac.
