CR3 Previews Not Working in Finder After macOS 15.4 and 15.4.1 Updates

I hope this response helps you resolve your issue. I am experiencing the same difficulty in QuickLooking my .cr3 files. Currently, I am compelled to manually open each .cr3 file using Lightroom.

The only solution I have discovered is to zoom in slightly while using QuickLook, and the image will be displayed. I trust this information is timely and helpful.

The current solution/workaround in Sequoia 15.4.1 for cr2, cr3, nef files etc... if you are on a laptop (or modern Apple) xdr-type display, is to use the photography preset (or any apple display preset where the brightness is locked). Then quicklook works fine.

I have the same problem with my NEF files. As a professional photographer this has caused me no end of problems trying to find a soulions. I just don't get Apple must know that 60-70% of pros use apple for there work

I have a Canon R6 MII and have the same issue where QuickLook is broken in macOS 15.4.x. I submitted a report to Apple as well.

I am having the same problem. I updated my MacBook Air to sequoia to 15.4.1 now no previews only blank squares I am using a Canon EOS R6

The same problem occurs with NEF (Nikon raw) files (macOS 15.4 and 15.4.1).

Any new information on when this will be addressed?

Yes, I've send Apple a bug report (when I updated to 15.4 when it was released and I noticed the problem).

Can't speak for the CR3 files but for Nikon (NEF) files: all the models I have or had.

I've deleted the Quick Look cache yesterday (in Terminal: qlmanage -r) and today Quick Look works again for the NEF files. Quick Look shows the embedded jpg file it is existing. That's how it worked before.

The preview in the Finder is still a black rectangle instead of the image. When I resize the column with the preview (now black rectangle) in the Finder, the preview image appears (but disappears when I revisit that same file).

Me too. Based on a suggestion in previous comments, I'm using Bridge to navigate files as a workaround, and it's actually a lot better/quicker than using Finder window, even when you could see the image. The image was so large in the preview window, I couldn't see any file info below it without scrolling down on the little preview, and that took more time. Even when/if they do fix this, I will continue using Bridge. Thanks.

FWIW, Sequoia did support 90 Nikon cameras and their NEF files. 15.4 broke support for the RAW files of many cameras. At this point all that can be done is wait for a future update. You can file another bug report from the feedback page.

Hey Devs, same issue after the update. Can't preview my raw thumbnails. Canon R6(CR3), MacBook Pro M2.

A great! This did the trick with my Canon R7 .CR3 raw previewing files on a Macbook Pro M3 2023 on Sequoia 15.4.1 tnx saved me some time! Even the tiles work..

I use a Pentaxk1 and I've encountered the same problem as well with my MacBook pro. I can look at individual DNG photos with the preview app but not the quick look option. This is cumbersome, of course. My workaround for now is to open batches in Lightroom to preview and then import to Photoshop from there. This bypasses the RAW editor, tho, so any immediate edits I have to do in LR, which has never been my favorite.

I'm glad to see Apple is aware of the issue. Hopefully there's a fix soon as I shoot and edit daily.

Update: changing the display to photography worked!

I updated to 15.5 and the issue persists for .DNG .ORF .RW2 files but .NEF files are strangely working with quick view. 🤷🏻

Just to add, space bar preview seems to be working for OM-3 .ORF files but not OM-1 .ORF files.
