iPhone not receiving Apple Mail app push notifications

My iPhone frequently waits to download email until I open the app. I am using the Apple mail app. I have push setting on and allow notifications. I am supposed to get ping when email received and popcorn sound for VIP mail. I am not getting these.

You will only get Push notifications for iCloud email accounts and Microsoft Exchange email accounts in the built in Mail app; those are the only two servers that push email. The exception is if you have the gmail app installed you will get gmail push. If your email account is with these servers and you are not getting push first restart your iPhone, and also make sure you have cellular voice working, as the notifications come over the voice signaling channel.

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN. VPN actually reduces your privacy, it does not enhance it, so you may want to rethink the reason you use VPN.

I don’t have a VPN app. The only thing that has changed since mail stopped working correctly was the newest software update. Do I need to configure the VPN? Could the update have uninstalled it or turned it off? I have never had to do this before and mail worked fine.

I did start using Malwarebytes on my phone about a year ago. But mail still pushed after using it.
