I cannot empty the trash. I keep getting this message "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003) Can somebody help me?

There's probably something amiss with one or other files on disk.
Run /Application/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and run the First Aid check against the drive. It should find and correct most common problems, then try again.
If I erase the entire drive, I do not have the software files to reinstall OS X on this iMac. I know it's an older computer. It has 1 TB storage, but with all the files that I am trying to trash, it has only 245 GB available. I am trying to clean up the hard drive so I can sell it.
